Knock Three Times
02.28.08 (7:47 pm)   [edit]

It's definitely not a telltales, can't even say it's a belief but..... I wanted to post it here so here we go.

Even since I was a little girl, until now,  my parents had thoght us to throw salts on the door whenever we heard a knocking on the door, and no one's in there.

Have you experienced this?! Yeah, I do. And surely my dad and mom had experienced one too even back in P.I. (Philippine Island). Did you opened the door and find nobody's really there?! Did it creeped you out?!

Here's what to do,  when you heard a knocking on door, don't just open it. I remember my parents told me that "real people" knock three times on the door. It is weird hearing just a one knock on your door, right?! or two?! And when you opened the door and saw nobody's there and this gives you a creep or ghost bumps, throw  some salts in there. (Just make sure, you're not playing with your kids around, or your neighboors kids, this, makes it a different case.) I don't know why it is suppose to be done or how it work out. I didn't ask, and I don't wanna ask.

Folktales: The Balete Tree
02.28.08 (7:26 pm)   [edit]

The balete tree, which is known as the enchanted tree. Why? Because it is believe to be inhabited with other beings such as the white lady , kapre, and is believe to serve as a portal between human worlds and the mystic world of fairies (diwata), gnomes (duwende), etc.

The balete tree is well known in the Philippines, specially in provinces being the "tree" that is the choice for other unseen beings to house themselves into. And news of experiences and sightings of white ladies, and mischivous spirits called engkanto often includes the tree as their home.

This, reminds me back in the Philippines, of the province where I grew up before my dad, my younger brother and I migrated to US. The province is called Oriental Mindoro and the nearby village/town next to our town was named Balete because this town has lots of balete trees. And there's a part of the town near the highway where one could barely see houses, mostly were balete trees. And somehow, when I reach the twilight to evening, riding a   jeepney or multi cub going home from my evening class, it's like a little bit creepy looking in those trees alongside the road, no houses at all, just the tress.

Photobucket

(image of a balete tree above) And yes, those you are seeing are the roots. And like some other trees, balete trees are have, or some of them has a little holes, or caves inside which is creepy and dark, which makes people believe more that a tree is inhabited. And if it is inhabited, don't mess up with it or play around. Full credit for Tochs Thoughts for the image.

The above image only shows mostly the roots, if you want to see more pictures of a balete tree, with the whole tree, you may want to visit Tommy Schultz here on his travel pictures, and scroll down to see his balete tree pictures. One of the best image of balete taken up close.

Image: Gumamela Flower
02.21.08 (1:22 pm)   [edit]

Here's a picture of a gumamela flower I took from my uncle's place in Tiera Santa. The gumamela tree (a tree? or a shrub?) I don't know either >.<  is about 5 ft. tall and has flowers of yellow and pink.

Photobucket

Above is the pink gumamela flower. Let me save the image of the yellow one for my next post ^.^

Also, gumamela flowers are use to cure pigsa in the Philippines. I just don't know the English term for the word. But it grows on any body part, and at first it is itchy and then it will hurt. It's not a serious sickness, (its not even a sickness.) Ahh..... just do research on it, I can't explain >.<

Just enjoy the image ^.^

The color of love seen on a bougainvilla flower. This was taken last Summer. The bougainvilla was already there on the backyard where we moved in. During winter, the bougainvilla looks like a sleeping tree. But during Summer, it blooms with lots of red flowers.

The Legend Of Coconut
02.13.08 (10:54 pm)   [edit]

Have you ever wonder why the coconut looks like a head? With two eyes and a mouth?! Just like the picture below......

Photobucket

Well here's a legend how did a coconut looks like a human head, a legend I wanna share for this valentines day.

Here's how I remember the legend.....

There was two lovers who truely loves its other. The problem is, the young girls parents doesn't like their daughters nobyo (boyfriend.) Let's just give a name, Riwata,  to the girl since I can't remember her name. They believed that their daughter deserves someone else that has the ability to give her a better life. Her boyfriend is just simply a peasant for their daughter and they don't like it.

They have done almost all they could think of to break the two lovers but it won't work, the two really loves each other. But there's one more last way they are willing to try, the mangkukulam (witch) that they know lives on a nearby village. And yes, they went to the witch with the wish to turn their daughters lover into something else where he couldn't get near their daughter anymore.

A stormy weather came, rains falling, which cause flooding and Riwata came looking for her beloved man but he couldn't find him. What he found swimming toward her direction on the flooded water is a bulate (brown worm: found on Philippine soil) and to her surprised it spoke to her, telling her to bury it where it can still watch over here, more like this,

"My loved, your parents had wish to a witch to turn me into this. My last wish is for you to bury me somewhere near you so I could still see you and watch over you even after my death." And so she did take and buried it alongside their nipa hut.

After few weeks where she had buried the bulate , sprouted a strange plant she had never seen before. She believes it is her beloved boyfriend and she took great care of the plant, watering it everyday. The plant soon turned into a straight, tall tree and when she pick one of its fruit she had noticed the two eyes and the mouth seems like looking at her and symbolizes a human head. Yes, she believes it was her love, even after death he's watching over her.

Blogging: Pera Sa Pagbablog?
02.13.08 (5:47 pm)   [edit]

Image: Calamansi
02.03.08 (6:53 pm)   [edit]

Here's an image of two, still green calamansi hanging on the tree. Picture were taken from my uncle's calamansi tree on his backyard garden. This calamansi tree bears lots of fruits that would turn to yellow when ripe. I had captured pics of these two hanging calamansi since they are too low about 2 feet and a half from the ground which makes it a perfect target for me ^.^

Photobucket

Calamansi is widely used in the Philippines for recipes which requires it, and is also use as juice for colds. Warm juice of calamansi is good for colds and coughs.

What is calamansi?

Lets say it is lemon's family member. If you live here in US you would use lemon or lime, but once you go in the Philippines, you would have to use calamansi. They are all sour you know, but calamansi skin is not hard unlike lemon and lime, specially when it turned yellow.
